Rom Av. JC is the artist name of Romain Hurdequint, who cuts and paints broken skateboard decks into Greco-Roman vessels. Founder of the blog The Daily Board and author of the anthology Skate Art (2018), he showed Burdigala, ex vin ad skathos at Zone Trois Galerie in 2024.

Biography

Rom Av. JC is the artist name of Romain Hurdequint. Since his teens he has approached art through the graphic world of skateboarding. In 2011 he started The Daily Board, a blog that over fourteen years became an international reference on the subject. In 2018 he published the anthology Skate Art: From the Object to the Artwork with éditions Cercle d’Art, now distributed worldwide, including at MoMA and the MET in New York.

Committed to opening up this hybrid field, he has organised several exhibitions in Lyon and Bordeaux — Inking Board, then Spraying Board — and co-founded Tigerclaw Supplies, a brand devoted to artists’ supports built around the skateboard.

Under the alter ego Rom Av. JC he reimagines depictions of leisure in antiquity. Working with spray paint, acrylic, marker and clay, he places the skateboard at the centre of gladiator combats and of the first Olympic Games, and shapes his decks like Greco-Roman jars. His method starts with collecting broken decks, which he cuts and assembles into rhytons, kylikes and other vessels of Greco-Roman inspiration. Worn, repaired and elevated in an approach close to kintsugi, these boards become contemporary archaeological objects — imperfect, and loaded with history.

From 16 February to 13 April 2024 Zone Trois Galerie gave him a solo exhibition, Burdigala, ex vin ad skathos — “Bordeaux, from wine to skateboard”. It begins with a historical fact: in 56 BC the Roman Empire reached Bordeaux, then known as Burdigala, and turned it into one of its major trading posts. Wheat, copper, Greek ceramics and wine circulated inside a walled town bordered by the Garonne. Rom Av. JC imagines the ancient ceramics that might have passed through the city in that period. In his alternate history, vases and jars are made of skateboard wood found cracked, broken or pieced back together, echoing archaeological finds. Painted on them are scenes of trade and of wine celebrations, punctuated with nods to his chosen medium.

A skater first and from a very young age, he dates his pieces as if they had been excavated: “c. 523 BC — Burdigala”, “c. 24 BC — Lutosus”. The titles are Latin — Vinum messis, Symposium Kylix, Medusa Skathos — and name both the form of the ancient vessel and the scene painted on it.
