Quête de liberté

at Zone Trois Galerie
“Quête de liberté” is painter Sophie Cordey’s solo exhibition at Zone Trois Galerie in Bordeaux. Trained in Paris and then at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee, she paints landscapes under construction, on the edge of abstraction. 30 October to 30 November 2024.
Press release
Sophie Cordey first entered the École Olivier de Serres in Paris, studying textile design. She then took a DSAA at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee, three years in which she developed a body of work on the living object and discovered lithography. There followed some years of “side roads” — pattern drawings for textiles and wallpapers, photographs of objects and landscapes — before she turned to painting alone.
“It is through painting that I try to express my relationship to the world, as a way into living it fully and, just as much, as a way of stepping out of it.
My work evokes landscape — a landscape under construction. Transcribing and undoing, as a way of taking hold of what is observed, crossed, lived. Play with scale, broken perspective, colours that grate; interlocking, expanse, upheaval; deconstruction.
Wind and rain, heat and light, smells, colours and sounds. Escapes and poetry load me with raw sensation, with accumulated vibration; then the magic of transformation happens in my studio.
In small or very large formats, I dive into colour and spread the energy out into planes, spaces, openings, confusions and losses of scale on the edge of abstraction, to recall the song of the landscape.”
