Biography
Caroline Desile is a ceramicist living in Bordeaux. Trained in architecture and urban planning, she has built a practice rooted in material, landscape and memory.
A graduate of the École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Paris-Belleville, she practised for some fifteen years in architectural offices in Paris before clay imposed itself as a more intimate and tangible extension of her thinking. Through it she opens a dialogue between humanity, architecture and nature.
Her work draws on land art, on modern and brutalist architecture, and on landscapes shaped by time: relief, strata, erosion. Ceramics becomes for her a field of exploration at once concrete and symbolic. Her sculptures, modular and open-ended, evoke architectural structures and fragments of territory in equal measure. Each module is a micro-architecture, self-contained but unfinished, conceived as a living system, in the image of the collective dynamics that shape our cities and our landscapes.
Stoneware — a raw, geological material — is at the centre of her research into balance, stratification and transformation. Every piece is slab-built. Layered strata, cantilevers, solids and voids make up a formal vocabulary activated by light and by time. What results is a quiet, sensitive sculpture that engages the eye, the body and our relationship to territory.
The works read as families named like survey records: Mountains, Hill, Cantilever, Tectogram, Stratification, Basalt, Sedimentum, Architectures, Silent Utopia. Most are compositions of several elements — from three to nine pieces — laid out on a wall or on a flat plane, in formats ranging from 36 × 32 × 7.8 cm to 58.5 × 48.5 × 11 cm. Table Geograms (2025), measuring 29.5 × 122 × 62 cm, is the horizontal version of the same thinking.
Zone Trois Galerie showed her work in Fragments of Territory, an exhibition shared with the painter Anaïs Vindel, from 25 September to 24 December 2025, with Château Desmirail as patron. The show unfolded as a suspended tracking shot, a mental cartography made of architectural and terrestrial fragments. Caroline Desile is also one of the ten artists in Summer Exhibition II, from 28 May to 12 September 2026, where she shows Sedimentum.
